This week one of the IGA’s directors, Shelia Downer, was able to visit the Forteau Volunteer Fire Brigade and present them with a cheque for the IGA grant they were awarded this year.
The funds granted will be used by the brigade to purchase a compressor for filling the departments oxygen tanks because there is currently no place within the town to conduct this service, and a double telescope ram to use with the jaws of life. The Forteau Fire Brigade has the only jaws of life in the Labrador Straits area, and without the extension valuable time can be loss in emergency situations. As well as this, they plan to replace eight oxygen tanks and a specialized yellow orbit bunker suit due to sizing reasons.
With the new equipment, the Forteau Volunteer Fire Brigade will be able to increase the safety of its members in emergency situations. Even more so, they can help ensure the safety of residents not only in Forteau, but surrounding communities in the Labrador Straits area.
