Meet the people who keep Dr. Grenfell’s mission going today:
Ms. Roney assumed the Chair of the Board role as of the IGA Board meeting held in May, 2023.
She grew up in Grand Falls, Newfoundland and Labrador and now lives in New York City, where she works in finance with the Bank of America. She is also president of the Grenfell Association of America. Ms. Roney is keenly interested in the issues of youth and education.
Mr. Pinder is a Chartered Accountant from the U.K. and is currently the Vice-Chair of the IGA and a Director of the Grenfell Association of Great Britain and Ireland.
Mr. Pinder lived in St. Anthony in the 1980’s, when his parents moved to take positions in the former Grenfell Regional Health Services. He has returned with his family to the province regularly over the past 25 years and has been active with Grenfell organizations for over 10 years. Mr. Pinder is currently Treasurer of the Grenfell Association of Great Britain and Ireland and chairs the IGA Scrutiny Committee.
Mr. Hagmann is the past-Chairman of the IGA, having retired from this position as of May, 2023.
He was the Chairman of the IGA since 2016.
He has spent his career in banking and investments and recently retired as a managing director of BlackRock, Inc., a large global investment management firm, headquartered in New York City. He has been active with Grenfell organizations for over 30 years and is also the past President of the Grenfell Association of America (GAA). Mr. Hagmann has travelled extensively in the Grenfell Region.
Ms. Bell Steinhauer is the president of Cohen’s Home Furnishings, a furniture chain located in various communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. She has more than 20 years of experience working for Newfoundland owned and operated businesses as well as volunteering for various associations and organizations throughout the province and Atlantic Canada. She was appointed as a Director of the IGA in 2014, and is delighted to be a member of the board in which her father was a Director for forty years as well as her grandfather, who served on The Grenfell Association of Newfoundland and Labrador.
She Chairs the IGA Investment and Outreach Committees.
Dr. Chesworth is currently Chairman of the Grenfell Association of Great Britain and Ireland. He was a family practitioner in the UK from 1980 to 2010. Dr. Chesworth worked in Newfoundland in 1977, as a doctor based in Flowers Cove. Also covering communities on the Northern Peninsula and Southern Labrador, on both sides of the Straits of Bell Isle. From 1978 to 1979 he worked as a doctor in Roddickton, covering communities all along the 'French Shore'. He became associated with IGA in 1974, when he first went to St. Anthony and North West River as a medical student.
Ms. Jeanloz is a co-owner of several small family businesses in manufacturing, publishing, and real estate. She is also active in youth development and educational initiatives with the YMCA and in senior care with Franklin County Home Care. A NEGA director for over 40 years, Ms. Jeanloz joined the Grenfell family as a child when her father supervised an engineering project in St. Anthony for the Mission. She returned as a summer volunteer with the orphanage in St Anthony. Her position on the IGA Bursary Committee reflects the NEGA’s continuing interest in and support of education on the coast.
She Chairs the IGA Nominating Committee.
Dr. Miller first came to the coast as a “WOP” (volunteer) medical student in 1956. He has made multiple visits over the years as an anesthesiologist. There were two summers in which he was a general practitioner on the hospital ship, Strathcona, and at other times doing clinics in coastal communities. He has served on the board of NEGA and, at one time, acted as its president. For 40 years, he has been part of the IGA board and was its Chairman from 1993 to 2003. Dr. Miller has retired from Massachusetts General Hospital but still remains part of IGA. In his spare time, he enjoys watercolour painting and woodworking.
Ms. Downer has lived in Labrador for more than 30 years and is a strong advocate for the development of rural, Northern and coastal communities. She has worked as part of a team throughout Labrador to build local knowledge, skills and effective tools to support the way people live, work and do business in Northern communities and has been actively involved in a wide range of community, regional and international organizations. She currently works with Memorial University’s Office of Public Engagement and also serves as the Vice President of Finance, Development and Engagement for the University of the Arctic.
Mr. Chingos credits two formative internships with Grenfell Regional Health Services in St. Anthony for inspiring his career in the health care industry. He currently works for the global analytics company, SAS Institute, advising health and life science companies on how to leverage their data to solve business challenges. He has been active with Grenfell organizations and returned to the coast regularly for 30 years.
Mr. Chingos, always inspired by Sir Wilfred’s example, is energized by the extraordinary opportunity to support those who seek to improve the lives of others.
Mr. Simms is a retired Administrator of College of the North Atlantic (Goose Bay campus), and has also recently worked with Health Canada in Happy Valley-Goose Bay. He Chairs the IGA Bursary Committee.
Mr. Rex Goudie is the CEO of the Goose Bay Airport Corporation, after a long career as the Manager of Field Operations with the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) in Newfoundland and Labrador. He has over 25 years of experience in the coordination, delivery, and design of economic/social development programs for Labrador. Mr. Goudie has been actively involved in community based organizations in Labrador since the 1980s, including the Grenfell Foundation, Rotary Club of Happy Valley- Goose Bay, and the Labrador Winter Games. He was also the founder and previous chair of the Air Labrador –Nasittuq Memorial Cancer Fund.
Mr. Goudie is delighted to be a member of the IGA Board and looks forward to using his knowledge and experience to continue building upon the success of the mission of the IGA.
Ms. Smith grew up in Central Newfoundland, and worked for the St. John’s Telegram before leaving journalism for human rights law. Like many IGA grant recipients, Ms. Smith was the beneficiary of need-based bursaries for both undergrad and graduate school. Ms. Smith currently operates a commercial law firm in New York City.
Ms. Smith’s family has deep roots with the Grenfell Mission. Her father was born in the St. Anthony hospital, which treated her grandfather for life-threatening burns suffered in a boat explosion, and where her grandmother worked as a nurse. Ms. Smith is deeply honored by the opportunity to serve.
Ms. Smith serves on IGA’s Strategic Planning, Nominations and Governance, and Outreach Committees.
Ms. Colbourne has been a member of her local town council for the past 16 years and has served as Mayor for the past 10 years. Municipal governance is a passion of hers!
She also chairs the board of directors for the local ambulance service. She's an active volunteer in other capacities of our province, and is a true advocate for all things pertaining to the Great Northern Peninsula. During here home time, she enjoys time spent with her long time partner and their two cats. Ms. Colbourne loves to cook and just in general time at home.
Mr. Canning was born at the “Grenfell Hospital” in St. Anthony, and his proud roots stem from Englee and Roddickton. An educator by trade, Canning taught and ran co-operative education programs in and around St. John’s for 12 years, before starting a new chapter in his life in 1996, when he began work with the IGA as its Administrator.
In his spare time, he enjoys sports of all kinds, walking, travelling, and spending time with his family. He is very proud and honored to be working with the IGA, and treasures his relationship with all of those he has worked with since he began this journey!
William grew up in St. Anthony, where a love for sports and community began. At 18, he moved to St. John's to pursue a Bachelor of Commerce at Memorial University, where he is just starting his fourth year of the program. With an interest in marketing and business development, William combines academic knowledge with a passion for teamwork.
William is eager to now be working with the IGA, where he will be handling marketing initiatives and managing the social media pages. He looks forward to contributing to such a dynamic and community-driven organization. Outside of school, he enjoys staying active through sports and exploring new hobbies in his free time.
