The Southern Labrador Development Association (SLDA) has played an important role in the social and economic betterment of the Labrador Straits for decades. Incorporated in 1974, the organization has a long history of working with municipalities, businesses, community groups, and residents to strengthen the region and respond to local needs.

With funding support from the International Grenfell Association (IGA), SLDA has been expanding its Regional Community Support Services Network to provide practical, community-based support across the Labrador Straits. The project focuses especially on seniors and community members who may need help accessing services, staying connected, and finding opportunities for greater participation in community life.

As part of this work, SLDA has been increasing outreach and information-sharing throughout the region. Support has included helping individuals navigate available programs and services, connecting with seniors in community settings, and creating more opportunities for in-person engagement. Outreach visits have taken place in communities along the Labrador Straits, including visits focused on helping residents renew access to the Canadian Dental Care Plan and learn more about other available supports.

The project has also supported activities that strengthen social connection and well-being. Through programs such as Wellness Wednesday and S.O.C.K. & Friends, community members have had opportunities to come together, learn new skills, and take part in meaningful shared activities. In March and April, Wellness Wednesday sessions brought together 14 participants who worked on crocheted comfort squares, with 99 squares completed for donation. These gatherings have helped foster friendship, creativity, and a sense of belonging, while also creating space for seniors and other residents to remain active and engaged.

In addition to direct outreach and programming, the project has helped support broader community planning and collaboration. SLDA has been involved in Age Friendly discussions and other partnership work aimed at strengthening services and improving quality of life across the region. This kind of coordination is especially important in rural areas, where communities often face challenges related to aging populations, shrinking volunteer capacity, and limited access to resources.

By supporting this project, the IGA is helping strengthen a network of services that reflects the realities of life in the Labrador Straits. Through outreach, community programming, and regional collaboration, the project is helping seniors and community members feel more informed, supported, and connected. It also highlights the importance of investing in practical, people-focused services that contribute to stronger and more resilient communities.
