The Cartwright Volunteer Fire Department has been serving the community since the 1980s, providing fire suppression and emergency response services to local residents. Guided by its mission to preserve life, protect property, and safeguard the community, the department plays a vital role in ensuring the safety and well-being of those living in the region.

Through funding provided by the International Grenfell Association (IGA), the department was able to move forward with an important project to replace its self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) equipment. SCBA units are one of the most critical tools used by firefighters, supplying clean, breathable air in environments filled with smoke and toxic gases. These conditions are in nearly every fire emergency and pose immediate risks to both firefighters and the individuals they are working to protect.

The need for replacement came after the manufacturer of the department’s existing SCBA sets discontinued production and could no longer guarantee that the equipment would meet National Fire Protection Association standards. As compliance with these standards is required for use at fire scenes, all eight existing units needed to be replaced so the department could continue operating safely and effectively.

With support from the IGA, the Cartwright Volunteer Fire Department was able to replace its outdated equipment with new SCBA units. This has ensured that firefighters are properly equipped when responding to emergencies, allowing them to operate more safely and with greater confidence in high-risk environments.

Past experience has shown the importance of having reliable SCBA equipment available. In previous fire responses, access to this equipment played a key role in allowing firefighters to act quickly and efficiently, contributing to successful outcomes and minimizing damage to homes and property. This grant allowed all members to have access to dependable equipment that helps maintain this level of preparedness.

By supporting this project, the IGA has helped strengthen the department’s ability to protect both its firefighters and the community it serves. Investments in emergency equipment like SCBA units contribute to safer working conditions for responders and support the continued delivery of reliable fire and emergency services in Cartwright and the surrounding area.
