The Mount Nascopi Ski Club has been a key part of the Labrador Straits community since 2002, providing accessible outdoor recreation opportunities for residents of all ages. Established to support skiing programs for children and youth, the club has grown into a hub for health, wellness, and community connection, serving members from across the region.

With funding support from the International Grenfell Association (IGA), the club successfully completed a project to improve its 2.2 km lighted trail system. The trail is used regularly for night skiing and snowshoeing, offering opportunities for individuals and families to stay active during evening hours. This is especially important for those balancing work, school, and other responsibilities, as it allows them to access outdoor recreation at times that would otherwise not be possible.

The project involved replacing the club’s aging lighting infrastructure, including deteriorating wooden poles and outdated light fixtures. The previous system, built more than 20 years ago using locally sourced materials, had become increasingly difficult to maintain. Poles had weakened over time, and lighting components had worn down, requiring frequent repairs and limiting the reliability of the trail during the winter season.

Through this project, new durable poles were installed, and the lighting system was upgraded to provide a safer and more reliable experience. Contractors were brought in to complete the installation of the poles, while club members contributed their time to reconnect and support the system, reflecting the strong volunteer base behind the organization.

The Mount Nascopi Ski Club continues to play an important role in promoting healthy, active lifestyles in the region. Its programming includes youth instruction through the Jackrabbit program, adult ski lessons, community events, and wellness-focused activities. The improved lighted trail will support consistent use throughout the winter months and contribute to both physical and mental well-being.

By supporting this project, the IGA has helped strengthen a valued community resource that brings people together and encourages year round recreation. The upgraded trail system has improved safety and reliability while reducing the ongoing maintenance burden on volunteers, allowing the club to continue focusing on delivering programs and opportunities for the communities it serves.
