The International Grenfell Association was proud to support the Birch Brook Nordic Ski Club in Happy Valley-Goose Bay through a 2024 grant that is helping fund new exterior lighting for its chalet area and trail access points. This is an important step in Birch Brook’s transition from a seasonal ski club to a year-round outdoor recreation destination. Birch Brook is a volunteer-driven, not-for-profit organization with deep roots in the region, tracing back to the 1970s. The club maintains an extensive list of cross-country ski and snowshoe trails that welcomes nearly 150–200 members annually. The club also has a growing number of visitors from across the Upper Lake Melville area.
The IGA grant is supporting the installation of solar-powered LED lighting mounted on pressure-treated wooden poles. The new lights will improve safety and accessibility between the chalet and parking lot, especially for seniors and families attending events during the darker months. They will also light up the Jackrabbit Playground and trail start/finish area, making it easier to host evening snowshoe events and allowing families to enjoy outdoor activities for longer hours.
This project aligns with the IGA’s commitment to healthy lifestyles and improving access to community-based recreation. We’re proud to support Birch Brook as it expands its offerings and continues to bring people together day or night.
