The International Grenfell Association is proud to support the Heart of Labrador 50 Plus Club through a recent grant focused on promoting healthy aging, lifelong learning, and meaningful social connection for seniors in the Upper Lake Melville area.

Incorporated in May 2024, the Heart of Labrador 50 Plus Club has already made a remarkable impact in its short time serving the community. With a growing membership base of over 250 individuals, the club is committed to offering inclusive, cross-generational programming that embraces wellness, cultural sharing, and community spirit.

The IGA-funded project this summer has helped support the delivery of a variety of wellness-focused events designed around key themes such as movement and physical activity, nutrition and food security, mental health and addictions awareness, pain management, the healing power of art and music, and traditional medicine practices.

In just a few short weeks this summer, the club has already hosted a variety of well-attended activities from weekly card games and craft nights to group walks and day trips. Events have included an intergenerational cornhole tournament, birthday celebrations, painting sessions, and an educational outing to North West River, where members toured the local museum and enjoyed live Labrador music.

One of the most inspiring aspects of the club’s programming is its focus on accessibility and inclusion. Members regularly volunteer to transport those with limited mobility or access to transportation. The club also makes thoughtful efforts to include members living with early stages of dementia, ensuring that everyone has a chance to take part and feel connected.

Although programming will pause briefly for the summer holidays, Thursday night card games will continue due to popular demand. Full programming is set to resume in September with even more activities aimed at enriching the lives of seniors throughout the region.

We commend the Heart of Labrador 50 Plus Club for their dedication to building a more connected, inclusive, and active community for older adults and we’re proud to help make this important work possible.
