The town of Main Brook (incorporated in 1948) is looking to promote its unique heritage and natural beauty to improve upon its already growing tourist industry. With the help of an International Grenfell Association (IGA) grant, the Main Brook Town Council has developed a Dr. Grenfell Historical Rest Area along Water Street providing a peaceful yet enriching stop for visitors and residents of Main Brook. This new addition will enable the community to honor the legacy of Dr. Wilfred Grenfell, a revered medical missionary whose adventurous life profoundly impacted Newfoundland and Labrador.
Last year, IGA funding enabled the design and installation of four storyboards, each honoring influential figures from Main Brook’s past. The current phase focuses on expanding the Dr. Grenfell storyboard, capturing the captivating story of his life-saving journey and the loyal dogs who played a crucial role in his survival. The rest area’s new amenities, including a park bench, gazebo, and additional fencing for visitor safety will provide a welcoming, comfortable space for reflection and exploration of Dr. Grenfell’s remarkable legacy.
Main Brook’s economy, heavily reliant on tourism, hopes this new addition will draw more travelers thanks to the area’s stunning natural landscape and unique historical attractions.
The IGA is proud to support Main Brook in its mission to preserve local history and promote community engagement, reinforcing the area to be an essential stop for those exploring the Great Northern Peninsula.
